Oliver Klink’s photographs and travels are known for their simplicity, beauty, and natural setups. Educated as an engineer in Switzerland and Canada, Oliver embraced photography twenty five years ago to merge the arts, science and nature.

The science plays an important role in Oliver’s photography. His detailed oriented philosophy is reflected in his technique, search for symmetry, and perspective. The mastery of color and composition softens the rigid approach of science.

Finally the glue to its successful photographs comes from his love for nature. Born and raised in the Swiss Alps, Oliver has enjoyed and photographed the outdoors as a backpacker, kayaker, mountaineer, and just observer.

Currently, Oliver is working on an assignment to blend photography with weekend travels. Users have access to the “52 weekend away from your city” series. The series touch upon trip planning, best spots for photography, best time of the year to visit and hit unique events. New cities are regularly released and shared at http://www.incredibletravelphotos.com.

If you are interested in being a compensated publisher in the “52 weekend away from your city” series, please contact Oliver Klink at oliver@incredibletravelphotos.com

African Wildlife (Tanzania) : Last December (2006), we had a chance to visit Africa. The first stop was the climb of Mt. Meru (4,650m), then a safari to the Northern Parks of Tanzania and finally an outback adventure to Southern Tanzania game reserve and national parks.

Each park visited is very unique and well worth a visit. My true favorite was the Serengeti, with sighting of leopards at Seronera, the wildebeest migration at Ndutu and a pride of lions devouring a kill at Lobo.

The eighth wonder of the world, Ngorongoro Crater, came as a close second. I spotted the last animal of the Big 5 family (Black rhino, elephant, hippo, lion and leopard).

In third place comes Ruaha National Park. Today, you can still experience the “early time” safari, with animals displaying their wild behaviors and hiding from cars and humans.

Arusha, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Selous game reserve were outstanding for viewing and photography opportunities.

If an African safari is on your future travel list, feel free to contact me for advice and trip planning. This is an experience of a life time.

One Earth - One People : The title truly reflects what I experience during my photoshoots - Being one with nature, sometimes very deep in the woods, others closer to civilization - My heart pounding with excitement or fear - And most of the time surrounded by no human beings.

One Earth · One People is about the sense of place - Its beauty - Its feelings - The spirit of the location. My intent is to show what's happening in this environment - Show details - Tell a story - And hope that my images get you closer to One Earth · One People.

My collection of images was photographed in Alaska - A magical place full of surprises. I have traveled to the same locations for years and never captured or saw the mystique of the light twice the same. In a blink of the eyes, the scene is transformed - Nature is displaying a new facet - Wildlife has moved on - Intimate moments passed. But after each click, there is excitement and hope of accomplishment of my intent - Exploration - Investigation with a purpose of bringing an image back.

And there are these serendipitous moments, like The Grizzly Bears at Sunrise, The Caribou in Foliage, where everything comes together. These are the moments, where nature "makes an image" for you - Where your spirit is in awe - And you feel that emotional connection.

I hope that One Earth · One People will let you immerse yourself in these magical moments.

Migrating Birds (Merced National Wildlife Refuge) : Merced Refuge, located in California's northern San Joaquin Valley, is critically important to wintering waterfowl, and attracts large concentrations of ducks, geese, and lesser sandhill cranes.

Over 2,000 acres of seasonal and semi-permanent wetlands are extensively managed to produce natural waterfowl food plants such as wild millet and swamp timothy. Thousands of ducks (primarily pintails), green-winged teal, and an impressive variety of shorebirds and wading birds, use the wetland habitat.

The refuge hosts up to 15,000 lesser sandhill cranes, the largest population in the Central Valley. Peak populations occur during November. A mixture of up to 100,000 geese (Ross', snow, white-fronted, and cackling Canada geese) use refuge marsh and croplands during November to March.

Grebes (Courtship Ritual) :
Worldwide, there are 22 species of grebes, aquatic diving birds similar (though not related) to loons and auks. Seven, including the clark's and western (photographed below), are found in the United States. Also known as "helldivers," the birds are roughly the size of ducks, but share none of their affinity for flying, which grebes do clumsily and almost exclusively to migrate. With lobed feet on legs set far back on their bodies, grebes are built for swimming and diving.

During the spring, western and clark's grebes perform spectacular courtship dances. In the “rushing” display, the mating pair swim side-by-side with their wings held back, their long necks arched, and their yellow beaks angled upward. They swim so quickly that their bodies are pushed up out of the water and they appear to run across the surface. This courtship ritual functions as a reproductive isolating mechanism, one way of preventing the grebes from exchanging genetic material with birds of other species.

Once the courtship is over, the female will lay two to six eggs. Both male and female take turns to warm up and turn the eggs. It takes just over 20 days for the eggs to hatch.

If you are interested in photographing the grebes, please join me at the photography workshop on May 8-10, 2009.

Hummingbirds : Photographing hummingbirds got me really excited. Over a 6 months period, I observed various species of hummingbirds and learned their patterns. As a result, the combination of wildlife and art photography did produce lively images.

All images were taken in a natural setting without flash or other setup. The lighting and predictability of their positions added tremendous complexity to the photoshoot. At the end of the day, it did pay off as the images really show the natural behavior of the hummingbirds.

Photographs are individually printed, backboarded and matted on archival material.

Snowy Owls : Images are for sale through PhotoCentral Gallery. Please contact them at www.photocentral.org. Thank you. Oliver Klink

=============================================================================

There is no group of birds more mysterious and fascinating than owls. The loudmouths of the raptor world, they peep, trill, toot, bark, growl, shriek, whistle chittle, whoop, chuckle, boom and buzz. Indeed, very few actually “hoot”. They have become the stuff of lore and legend – from the Roman myth that an owl foot could reveal secrets to the First Nations belief that owl feather could give a newborn better night vision. But the truth about owls is much more exciting.

These large owls breed on the Arctic tundra, where females lay a clutch of 3 to 11 eggs. Clutch size depends upon the availability of food, and in particularly lean times a usually monogamous pair of owls may not breed at all. Parents are territorial and will defend their nests against all comers—even wolves.
Young owls, especially males, get whiter as they get older. Females are darker than males, with dusky spotting, and never become totally white. Some elderly males do become completely white, though many retain small flecks of dusky plumage.
The snowy owl is a patient hunter that perches and waits to identify its prey before soaring off in pursuit. Snowy owls have keen eyesight and great hearing, which can help them find prey that is invisible under thick vegetation or snow covered. The owls deftly snatch their quarry with their sharp talons.

A snowy owl's preferred meal is lemmings—many lemmings. An adult may eat more than
1,600 lemmings a year or three to five every day. The birds supplement their diet with rabbits, rodents, birds, and fish.

These magnificent owls sometimes remain year-round in their northern breeding grounds, but they are frequent migrants to Canada, the northern United States, Europe, and Asia.
Lemming availability may determine the extent of southern migration, when owls take up summer residence on open fields, marshes, and beaches.

If you are interested in learning their behavior and photographing these amazing creatures, join us for the next snowy owl workshop (http://incredibletravelphotos.smugmug.com/gallery/5240505_BQhJG)

Pie Billed Grebes - Parenthood Behavior : If it swims like a duck it must be a duck, right? Not necessarily ... The pied-billed grebe may mimic the movements of a duck in water but this bird does not have webbed feet. Instead its toes have lobes extending out from the sides, which makes it a swimmer to rival any duck. The pied-billed grebe is pigeon sized, brownish in color and has a chicken-like beak.

When you photograph and observe the grebes in the field, like Yamil and I did last week, you suddenly learn a lot more about their behavior. The couple had 5 chicks, which needed to constantly be fed. Parents took turn to fish and when they returned they made sure they equally fed the ckicks.

Check out the size of crawfish they brought back. It is quite amazing to see the young ones swallowing such large portions.

By observing these grebes for a few days, we figured out their patterns and schedule. And when this happens, photographing wildlife becomes more than just taking a picture. It is an excelarating experience.

                  November 7 & 8, 2009
The heart of Photoshop is the use of selections and masks for localized
editing. There are dozens of ways to designate a portion of an image
for enhancement. The two day advance workshop will include
demonstrations on some of the more effective approaches to selections
                  and masking including:

                      selecting vs. masking
                      refining edges

This two day highly intensive workshop will explore in great detail the most
powerful tools available in Photoshop - masking and selections. We will carefully
balance this technical exercise with the overall course emphasis of photography
as an art form. Our mission is to help each participant realize their vision.

Photography is a process that allows us to create an image based on our vision.
If capture is the sketch then post processing is the paint. Our studio is the
digital darkroom and Photoshop our tools for transforming our images into works of
art. Better understanding of the tools gives us greater freedom to create whatever
we can imagine.

Understanding masking and selections gives us total control over our images. The
use of these critical tools allows us to perform the most intricate editing such
as controlling color and tone in a sky without affecting the rest of the image,
removing distracting objects, or modifying a busy background no matter how
difficult the selection.

This is a hands-on workshop with an instructor/participant ratio of one to three and
will culminate in a final pint. Lunches and snacks will be served during the two days.

The following is our signature approach here at CreativeLightworkStudio Workshops:

You spend time, one-on-one, with an instructor applying the course lessons to your work
We teach creative vision by showing you what can be done to your work
You will learn not only new tools, but also how to apply them successfully to improve your artwork
We deliver a final product, your print
   Every question is answered

We are looking forward to hosting you at this new workshop.

How often have we been disappointed with print results? Colors don't
match what we saw on the monitor. The medium has become very complex
with different types of printers, inks and papers along with the
confusing methods and settings. The two day workshop will provide a
very strong knowledge base of printing and help participants to
achieve predictable print results. The workshop includes:

Benson Ski Hut, Lake Tahoe (April 22-23, 2006) : Our epic trip to the Benson Ski Hut.

This was our third trip to a ski hut this winter. The first one (Bradley ski hut in Lake Tahoe - December) took us a mere 3 ½ hours on snowshoe. The trail was well marked and even with inaccurate GPS coordonates, we found the place easily.

Our second trip (Ostrander ski hut in Yosemite – March) was more challenging. The 10.3 miles took us over 8 hours as heavy snow delayed the breaking of the trail. We reached the hut after dark, however we never feared of not finding the place.

Our third trip (Benson ski hut in Lake Tahoe – April) pushed our outdoor skills to the limit. The route, Oli carefully mapped, was a 5.6 miles/2,200 ft elevation travel following a portion of the Sierra Crest trail and then winding away from ridges, to avoid avalanche dangers.

We started the day at the base of Sugarbowl and made good time to reach the top of Mt. Lincoln (8,500 ft. elevation). One of the bowl crossings challenged Judy and John on snowshoe to the point where their ski poles were used extensively as anchors to avoid sliding. The change in weather (heavy snow, hails, and thunderstorm) slowed our progress and turned an easy trail into a mystery route. To our good fortune the weather improved upon the approach of the Benson Hut.

The big question was, where is it? The GPS spotted the hut at no more than 20ft, and there were no traces of any structure. We roamed around the location, checked the altitude (we were 30ft above the intended location), and after some delirious moments, John discovered a 4 foot deep hole that had been dogged out for a chimney. Suddenly a moment of panic sank in, knowing that we might have to build a snow shelter for the overnight, unless we were prepared to dig 30ft of snow to reach a door/window of the hut. Luckily, after further scoping, we traced a trench that led us to the second floor window of the Benson Hut.

The basic accommodation, buried under the snow, was a grace. In any case the reward was a terrific sunset that ended a very enduring day in the outdoor. We were safe!

Enjoy the pictures of our epic trip.

Oli & Judy.

Bishop Creek (October 2006) : The California Eastern Sierras are a wonder anytime of the year, but particularly during the foliage. The weather, even so unpredictable, will rarely dissapoint you if you are patient enough.

I experienced incredible lighting in Bishop on October 1st. 10 minutes after the sunset, the entire sky turned bright red. It was an apocaliptic moment when the foreground started to light too.

I always thought that Galen Rowell used saturated filters to display these incredible sunsets in the Eastern Sierra. Now, I know that it is actually real.

What a pleasant surprise!

Alaska (Katmai & Denali NP) - July 14-31, 2006 : Alaska rewarded us with incredible nature and wildlife. We have posted a few pictures of two of our favorite stops: Katmai and Denali National Park. At each location, timing and patience were key to capturing the beauty and the power of the subjects.

At Katmai, we spent 5 days surrounded by grizzly bears. Strict rules need to be followed so that neither bears nor humans get injured. One story in particular comes to mind to describe the power of these bears. A fisherman was casually fly fishing at the mouth of the Brooks River. In this habitat, one has to watch his back for unexpected encounters. As you probably guessed, a young grizzly male was lurking and frightened the fisherman by catching the hooked salmon barely before the fish was out of the water. I had a chance to talk to the fisherman the following day and asked him if he was fishing again. His answer was: "I didn't believe that grizzlies run so fast. In any case, you can borrow my poles as I am done fishing for a while!". His saving grace was the angle of attack the bear took to get to the fish.

Denali is known for the Big Five animals (bears, wolves, moose, dall sheeps, caribou). We were fortunate to spot all of them at a distance (aka sometimes just "dots" across the tundra). Even more inspiring is the crowning jewel of North America's highest peak (Mount McKinley), rising 20,320 feet above sea level. Statistics show that the Alaska Range clears up only 30% of the time. And after 4 days of clouds and rains we got our window of opportunity. At 8PM, we got a glimpse of the summit. A few hours later, the entire range was cloudless for the 11:30PM sunset. The magic lasted til sunrise at 4AM and then the mountain hide itself in her traditional attire. A few hours of hiking got us these wonderful views.

I hope you'll enjoy this Alaska sample. Feel free to let us know which two pictures are your favorites.

SilverOak Napa Valley - California (Annual Release Party) : In the early 1970s Silver Oak Cellars emerged as a dream tied to an intrepid idea: to create a Cabernet Sauvignon of fully developed flavors and velvety soft textures on the day it was released for sale.
However, for us, the dream is to gather a group of friends and "survive" the annual release party. And here is the story ...

Canon 7D vs. Mark III : 7D vs. Mark III

Test done when photographing raptors for 2 consecutive days in Halfmoon Bay. The following equipment was used for comparison:

1) 400mm DO
2) 1Ds Mark III, 21 Mb pixel, 1x crop
3) 7D, 18 Mb pixel, 1.6x crop

The emphasis was to evaluate the capture (how quickly the camera locks on moving subject) and the tracking (keeping accurate focus).

Observations:
1) Still subject, high ISO (1600), F7.1 1/800s
Single center point focus, AI Servo
(Photo #1, #2)
Both cameras performed really well, with slightly higher noise on the 7D. As I was able to approach the subject close, there was no need to crop the full frame image to match distance to subject.
Advantages: Mark III for noise level

2) Flying subject, 400 ISO, F6.3 1/1250s
Mark III: Single center point focus, AI Servo
7D: AF Point Extension, AI Servo
(Photo #3 to 7 (Mark III), Photo 8-13 (7D))
The tracking on the Mark III performed with higher a ccuracy. Didn’t loose focus on the subject even against a busy background.
The tracking on the 7D was not as accurate and provided some softness around the subject’s eye. Even against a plain background the AF Point Extension didn’t perform with high accuracy. Against a busy background, it started to loose focus on the main subject.
In this test, the subject couldn’t be approached as close. So to do a true side by side comparison the Mark III images had to be cropped to 2821x 2231 vs. 5184x3456 (on 7D). Sharpness is still better on the cropped image.
Advantages: Mark III when compared to the AF Point Extension from 7D

3) Flying subject, 400 ISO, F7.1 1/1000s
Mark III: Single center point focus, AI Servo
7D: AF Single Point, AI Servo
(Photo #14 to 17 (Mark III), Photo 18-20 (7D))
This test shows very good tracking for both systems. The full frame images had to be cropped extensively (and still provided good resolution) to match the 7D reach. With so much cropping, there is more capabilities for post processing with the 7D images (larger size).
Advantages: 7D

Overall results:
This test did put the 7D at slight disadvantage over the 1 Ds Mark III. Noise was higher and the new AF focusing system didn’t provide the expected easier tracking (new AF settings). On the other hand, the 1Ds lacked the reach.
The good news is that the 7D tracking system, when used in AF Single Point did not disappoint. I believe with more time with the camera and using additional custom settings, results can possibly be improved.
I also noticed that the tracking was pretty accurate on the 7D and rarely lost focus in a sequence of images (happened only one time).
All considered, the 7D is a viable body for moving subjects (e.g. birds in flight). Unfortunately, the new AF focus doesn’t replace the skills and practice needed to get sharp images ;-)

NOTE: Images were not retouched, just converted to jpeg.
